Somatic Experiencing
Providing a Space for Growth and Healing
What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine that allows individuals to process and release trauma stored in the body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, SE recognizes that trauma doesn’t just affect the mind; it also impacts the body. By integrating physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts, Somatic Experiencing facilitates deep healing and restores balance to both the nervous system and emotional well-being.
SE is based on the understanding that traumatic experiences can become "stuck" in the body when the nervous system is overwhelmed and unable to process the trauma fully. This trapped energy can manifest as physical tension, chronic pain, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, etc.
Somatic Experiencing is a transformative therapeutic approach for many people. This approach is particularly helpful for those who have:
-
Experienced trauma or abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)
-
Suffered from PTSD or complex trauma
-
Struggled with anxiety, panic, or depression
-
Endured chronic pain or tension
-
Lived through difficult life transitions or losses
-
Felt disconnected from their body or emotions
-
Had negative experiences with traditional forms of therapy
Is SE Therapy for you?
What can I expect in a SE session?
In a Somatic Experiencing session, you can expect a calm and supportive environment where we will help you tune into the sensations in your body. An SE session typically begins with a check-in, where you share how you're feeling and what’s present for you in the moment. We then will guide you to notice physical sensations—such as tension, discomfort, or warmth—and gently explore these sensations to understand their connection to your emotions or past experiences.
sing techniques like pendulation (moving between distress and safety) and titration (processing trauma in small, manageable pieces), we will help you release stored trauma and tension.
Throughout the process, you’ll be empowered to listen to what your body is communicating to you, with us providing support and connection.
Do I have to want SE Therapy in order to work with you?
No, you do not. I see SE as another tool in our toolbox of healing. While SE can be very helpful when we are feeling stuck or that momentum has lessened, it is not the only therapeutic modality that I use. We can still work together if you decide SE is not for you.

Do I have to be in person to do SE?
